Hearing Impairments

Intervention with children who have hearing impairments

We have medical intervention, educational intervention and also technical aids in order to minimize their disabilities.
Medical Intervention
Actually, most conductive hearing losses can be medically conduct.
One condition which is called Chronic Otitis is alleviated by antibiotics or Myringotomy. This is a procedure in which ventilating tubes are placed in the eardrums to provide proper ventilation between the middle ear cavity and the outside environment via the external ear canal. Surgical approach is also feasible to be done such as reconstructing the middle ear, repair, and shift or rebuild eardrum, and construct membranous windows into the inner ear too.
Cochlear implant also may be done whereas it implies surgical reconstruction of the cochlea by repair or transplant. This technique was developed in Australia in the late 1970s. Please take note that this is more suited to children, not the adult people. This electronic device provides auditory information for sensironeural type of deafness.
Technical Aids
Technical aids involve amplification, tactile methods, computers & information technology. For instance, FM (frequency modulation) is the carrier waver that is transmitted through the air via FM from a teacher-worn microphone to a student-worn FM receiver. It is also can be moved freely. Soundfield system also has the same function but could be done in fixed areas. Personal Soundfield Amplification work out when speaker sit right next to the target student.
Another device is TTD/TTY (telecommunication device), tele-typewriter that offers direct telephone access to each other and to community services.
It enables deaf people to listen to messages and respond orally, reading and typing. For hard-of-hearing, Hearing aid compatible (HAC) could be used.
Other initiatives are interpreting flashing flight signal at home and captioned television shows.
Educational Intervention
In educational intervention, modification of educational objectives is due to child’s actual functional level rather than chronological age or grade placement.
We also need extensive curricular modifications which are flexible, adaptive currently and touch on many aspect of special children necessity. Teacher also must learn techniques for attaining comprehension. They must acknowledge hearing loss information, managing behaviour of themselves and student. They must be creative in teaching technique. For instance, teach students on speech reading trough watching lips and face, or using many visual aids. Teacher and student should effectively use the amplification. In addition, school also should provide Interpreters, resource room, Specialist teacher and supportive encouragement to students. Teachers may involve peers among the students as stimulus in these students learning session such as letting them communicate, play and study in meaningful ways. Parents role in supporting psychologically and materially towards their child also help them to develop and affect their growth.

Problem Assess to Education
There is type of deafness that is too sensitive even to the low decibel of sound. The low decibel sounds that they heard become too high. There is type that students cannot hear at all and also hearing with low ability. All these are the barriers to students to study using all senses towards effective learning. This is because we can memorize and understand more if we see, hear, touch and experienced. Furthermore, in early learning, teacher and parents are not easily teach them to understand how to use the device, sign language and speaking. Before they can be intervened by all above mentioned ways of intervention (except medical intervention) they should undergo process how to use tools of learning. For example, if they cannot gain the teacher instruction, how come they can read others people lips? Despite these, parents are not affordable to purchase sophisticated device and even surgery. These children also cannot experience this world realistically because what they can see is not supported by another important aspect, which is hearing.

Conclusion
Since there is type of hearing impairment that can be alleviated, we cannot stop to think and inventing new or effective ways to intervene hearing impairment. Who are we? Teacher? Students? Parents? Society? Government?Supposedly, we cannot rely on only particular party to do intervention but all people should have intention to help this unfortunate but special people. All parties must contribute and concern about not only students with this particular disabilities but as whole. Teacher or personnel that expert or knowledgeable in this domain should convey to society the importance information of special education and special children. We need to prepare our parents nowadays or in future to have basic knowledge of impairments so that awareness to care about these special children will arise and can be manifest in positive ways.
